Enhancing Classroom Access and Equity Through Academic Language


In this interactive workshop, New York State TESOL “Outstanding Teacher Award” 2015 recipient Scott Freiberger will support all teachers and administrators in improving instruction. Participants will gain an understanding of Academic Language (AL) and its features, develop an awareness of the importance of teaching AL, and learn “hands-on” strategies for choosing academic words and enlightening classroom conversations. The role of vocabulary knowledge in our students’ school success will be discussed, and helpful handouts will be distributed. Scott Freiberger is honored to be the recipient of the New York State TESOL “Outstanding Teacher Award” 2015. For nearly two decades he has worked as an educator, school-wide instructional mentor, and teacher trainer, and currently works as an ENL Teacher at John Bowne Elementary School for Global Studies in New York City. As a progressive thinker with a penchant for pragmatism, Scott looks forward to facilitating at EDxEDNYC!
